Start this adventure out with a spectacular helicopter ride over glaciers and icebergs. We often see moose, black bears, dall sheep and mountain goats. Land on a snow field high on a glacier and enjoy two hours with our Iditarod sled dogs and their mushers. Help harness the team and take them for an exhilarating 2 mile ride through real snow. You can even stand on the runners and mush yourself.
Next, board the helicopter and zip down to our wilderness camp on the shore of Lake George where your guide will be waiting for you. This is glamping at it's best: comfortable, roomy Arctic Oven tents on a wooden platform. Carpet floors, real beds and the best view in the world! Huge Icebergs often line the shore and Colony Glacier is very active so you'll hear the ice crack and see ice calf into the lake.
Hop in a kayak of into the raft with your guide and explore the icebergs up close. The scale is hard to imagine, the smaller bergs are the size of a house, the big ones are a city block wide and high...
All these adventures and the fresh mountain air make you hungry, so next is a healthy, delicious meal, prepared by your guide. Your choice of steak or salmon on the grill, fresh veggies, salad, dessert - the works. We fly all the food in with you on the helicopter and if you decide to bring a bottle of wine or champagne from the lodge we have nice glasses at camp.
We constantly spot the area for wildlife with binoculars and the spotting scope and often see moose, Dall sheep and black bears (don't worry, the camp is protected by an electrical fence) and sometimes coyotes, wolves or even wolverines. Last year we had a family of Dall sheep walk right up to the camp!
Enjoy the evening around the campfire, looking over the lake to the icebergs and the glacier in the golden evening light. Go for an evening stroll along the shore or just relax with a glass of wine exchanging travel stories. We have a maximum of 6 guests at a time - private options are available if you want a special evening with just your sweetheart, friends or family.
The next morning a hearty breakfast awaits and if you like there is still time to take a mountain bike for a spin, go out on another iceberg tour or a hike...or you can relax in camp and eat a leisurely breakfast and wait for the helicopter to pick you up and fly back to reality.
If you only have a few days in Alaska this will show you all that our great state is about: glaciers, sled dogs, incredible mountain scenery, icebergs and wildlife. See you out there!
